Well, I didn't disappear or die, much to the disappointment of several people here (does anyone still read this blog?!). At the moment, I'm listening to the UD game on the Internets radio, thanks to the ever-popular Larry and Bucky. A halftime update will come during, well, halftime. So look forward to some filler and enough sexiness to make you want to change your pants. Get ready - I'm back bitches.

Halftime Update

Well, not much to say besides ouch. I was hoping we'd be playing better than we are right now. Defense isn't up to par with what I'd expect. I'm honestly surprised we're down by only 5 points. I just hope BG is opening up a can of whoop-ass in the locker room right now - we need it to come out running in the second half.

Big Dog has 3 fouls through the first half - not a good sign, as we're gonna need him in the second half.

Stinnett and Runnels are both leading all scorers with 12 points. if we want to get back into it and hope to win, we need to shut them both down for the rest of the game.

Kurtis puts up a big ol' goose-egg through 20 minutes. Fuck, he didn't even put up a single shot. Why am I not surprised about this?

I am thinking we're gonna play better in the next 20 minutes, as we have been a decently productive second-half team in the past. Let's hope that's the case.

Not a great first half at all, but hopefully we can turn it around. I'll be back with a game recap afterwards, or rigth ebfore I have to leave for work. Whichever comes first.

End of the Game

Final score: UD - 90 CU - 80

Wow. First half - eh. Second half - HOLY #@%$!!!

If you had told me UD would break 70 points against this Creighton team, I would've had to smack you up a bit. If you told me we would've scored 90, I would burn you at the stake for practicing witchcraft. Open mouth, insert foot.

Man-crush Chris Johnson had a hell of a game, scoring 18 points and 15 boards in 27 minutes. I want to have his babies.

Pop-a-Shot Luke scored 9, but went 30% shooting, 3-8 from behind the arc. Not awful, but still not great. I really wish he'd learn to pick his shots better. But if he can have a game like this on a regular basis, I might rag on him less. Might.

I'm excited for Puerto Rico. I think we can really show up, especially getting a young GT team this early in the season.

Overall, not a bad game against a very good Creighton team. I think this really sets the tone for PR. I'm looking forward to it.

Spring!

Hells yeah! Yeah, I'm lazy, what can I say?

So I'm now on Spring Break. It's nice, being away from campus for the next week or so, not worrying about classes. I still need to write two 10-page papers and an essay to change majors, but it is nice to be home. I'm not working, so I'll have more time to get work done and hang out. I'll be joining the OSU APhiO Chapter Monday evening, which I'm looking forward to. It's gonna be a lot of fun.

It's looking more and more likely that I'll be in Dayton over the summer, which will be nice. I'll take a few classes each summer term, to get them out of the way and to help bring up the GPA (a 1.9 ain't gonna cut it when I'm looking for a job). I'll need a job on campus so I can make some extra money, so finding one should be "fun." But at least I'll be employed and have some spending cash.

I'm still looking for a place to live next year. The parents are really pushing an RA position, which really wouldn't be bad - room and board, and food paid for. Plus I'll have a room to myself. I'll definitely look into it, and hopefully they're still looking for RAs for guys' floors.

Not much else has been going on, so I think I'll bring it to a close with that.

A fitting end to a crazy week

And that fitting end is beer!

Yeah, so its been one heck of a week. It's a great cause, and it'll be a lot of fun. I'll be working at the Smash-A-Tangent booth. Ever wanted to take your aggression out on your Tangent? Well, now you can!! Because Tangent sucks so much, we're destroying several of them tomorrow. Be there. Or I'll hunt you down.

On a different note, it's official - I'm changing majors. Currently I'm a Biology major. Well, as much as I don't want to believe it, it's not working for me. In order to get a degree in BIO, I need to pass Organic Chemistry - one of the hardest classes ever concieved. I've tried twice, and failed both times. I don't think I'll pass it. Plus, I'm not doing too well in my BIO classes. So, in light of that, and on the suggestion of my advisor, I have decided to change majors to General Studies, with a concentration in science. All the classes I've taken so far will go toward my credit count, but I'll get to take more classes in other areas, such as Geology (of which I'm taking two classes next semester). I'll still be able to graduate on time, and I'll plan on going into grad school for a more specific field (such as something dealing with BIO). The switch will likely happen within the next week. Thank God I don't have to take O-Chem now. The summer can be concentrated on working (possibly) taking some mroe gen-ed classes to help me graduate and boost the GPA. I'm feeling really good right about now. :-)

Gooooooooooooooo Dayton Flyers!

Holy shit that was a great game. A poor finish to the season hurt UD's chances of getting in, and losing to Duquesne in the A-14 semis didn't help. But we're in, and that's really all that matters. UD (an embarrassing 11-seed) takes on West Virginia (a 6-seed) on Friday afternoon (3:00) in Mineapolis. If they get past that, they'll take on the winner of the Kansas/N. Dakota State game for a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in Indianapolis.

On the same note, Ohio State (look, my first reference to them in a blog about them!!) will play Siena (who?!?) Friday night here at UD Arena. Win that game and they'll take on the winner of Louisville/Play-In-Game Winner. So, basically they'll play Louisville.

OSU and Dayton both ended up in the Midwest bracket, while Xavier is in the East bracket as a 4-seed. If they win out the first weekend, they'll play in the regionals in Boston. However, their first two games are way out west in Boise, Idaho (they have a basketball arena there?!). As much as I hate X, I'd love to see them go deep for the name of the A-10 - so hopefully they won't get screwed over by jetlag.

And what about Temple, you ask. The winner of the A-12 tourney. Well, they got an 11-seed and are playing the first weekend in Miami (lucky bastards...). Win out, which isn't all that likely, and they earn a trip to regionals in beautiful Memphis, Tennessee, courtesy of the South bracket.

Should be a fun March.

And the plot thickens

UD loses, sending Duquesne to take on Temple in the A-14 Championship. But I'm not too worried yet. Look at our season so far. Huge wins over Auburn (looking even better now that Auburn's showing up in the tourney), Marquette, and X. If we get snubbed (which I really don't see happening), it would be one of the biggest in years. The way we've played, we're probably looking at a 10 or 11 seed, which isn't too bad. As an 11 seed, we would have a better chance to make a run, going up against a 3-seed in the second round. There's even a chance we might get a 12-seed, meaning we'd face a 4-seed in the second round. Clearly, either of these scenarios give us a great chance to make a huge run - something this team is built to do, and completely capable of doing. Should be a fun time.

Now it gets interesting

Well, Temple just beat X. That just makes everything all that more interesting. Another bubble team gone. UD holds their fate in their own hands now. X is Dancing, no matter what would've happened in Atlantic City. If Dayton loses tonight, either Temple of Duquesne will go on to win the A-14 tourney. If we win tonight, but lose tomorrow, we won't get in. In either scenario, we can pretty much kiss a tournament bid goodbye. There's no way in hell the committee will give the A-10 two at-large bids. The conference just hasn't been strong enough all year. This really is March Madness, but it's nerve-wracking as all hell. This is what March Madness is all about.

On a related note, Duquesne is next up for the Flyers. As always, we're going to need to watch Ajax and hold him down as best we can. Hopefully another huge game from the newly-respected Luke Fab. I don't know what's gotten into him the last week or two, but now he's playing like he should've been all year. At least he's doing it when it counts, though. If he can keep it up and play like this the rest of the year (and in the future), I'm excited about what's gonna happen. And if not, well, it's back to where us UD followers are at the rest of the year - Square 1.

Should be a good game tonight. And it's actually on TV. Such is life for us, but it still sucks balls.

Dickie

Have I mentioned how annoying Dickie V. is? Exams out the wazoo, assignments to get done, and a bunch of work for A Phi O. It's honestly going to be the busiest 2-week stretch of the semester. Next week I've got two exams, several assignments to get done, a couple papers to work on, research hours to complete for my psychology class, and more work for APO. This is probably comparable to finals week, though that's only one week of hell, not two. I already know I'm not sleeping tonight. I need to get a jump-start on a bunch of stuff for the next week and a half, as well as finish studying for my Vertebrate Zoology exam tomorrow. The light at the end of the tunnel is pretty far away right now - I won't be out of it until at least the middle of the month. And even then I doubt it'll be easy for the rest of the semester. At least I know I can get a nice start on my work tonight so it won't be quite as stressful for the rest of the week.

On another note, the Xavier game is tomorrow night. UD takes the hour trip down I-75 to take on the X Blue Blobs in the 'Nati. I already know it's gonna be ugly. Searcy, our Big Scary Black Dude, is out with a sprained knee he suffered in practice. Apparently UD practices and UFC cage matches are similar. Anyway, this is gonna hurt us big time. Why? Because this leaves Kurtis "Hillsman" as our only center. He better play the game of his life if we're gonna have a chance. And by "game of his life," I mean he needs to get at least a double-double and play tough on the boards. (I know what you're thinking. You're thinking there's no way thats happening. And you'd be right.)

I hate to play Devil's Advocate, but it's not going to be fun to watch. It'll be a titanic struggle. Thank God I'll be at BW3s with a beer in my hand. If I know UD - Xavier games, I'll need it.

Oh WHIO

You fucking suck. Which school really is better? Well, I'm going to prove to everyone why UD really is the better of the two.

1. Campus location -- X is surrounded by ghetto. UD has ghetto on the north side, graves to the east, rich people to the south, and a river to the west. Plus we have our own Ghetto - the place for parties. Advantage UD.
2. Campus activities -- You can walk through the Ghetto any night of the week and see several parties going on. At Xavier, there's nothing. Just hood. Advantage UD.
3. Arenas -- Both schools have extremely nice facilities. Xavier's is right there on campus, something UD can't claim. However, UD Arena has an atmosphere and history that is second to none in the nation. I'm gonna call this one a tie.
4. Mascots -- Rudy Flyer vs. D'Artigan and the Blue Blob. This is easy. Rudy is pure awesome, from his leather helmet and goggles down to his bad-ass moon boots. D'Artigan is just a flamboyantly gay Frenchman posing as a musketeer. The Blue Blob is just a retarded Cookie Monster. Advantage UD.
5. National success and attention -- We all know the answer to this one, at least in recent years. Is it true, or fair? That's for another place, another time, another rant. I could write a novel about it (if I had the time or energy). I'm just going to grudgingly say it and move on. Advantage X.
6. Community response -- UD basketball is what you do in Dayton. Either that or inner-city gang activity. Or both. Cincinnatians are too busy worrying about the Bengals (read: Chad Ocho-Cinco), the Reds, and UC to give a damn about Xavier. The only ones who really pay that much attention to Xavier athletics are the students, alumni (if they have no other life), or those who live close to the shit-hole they call a campus. Advantage UD.

So there you have it. Six excellent points. The final tally -- UD with 5, X with 2. UD is clearly better than X. So we can finally put this age-old argument to rest. And for all you haterz out there - fuck off. UD is better. Deal.

Ah, hell...

What I'm about to say will likely make me look like a complete pussy, but I don't really care. I have several classes with her this semester, and have had a number with her in past semesters. I've been talking with her, and have been getting to know her better. I really like her. A lot. The thing is, I just can't tell her. I don't know what it is. Maybe that my two other relationships have ended badly (from my own fault). Maybe because I still haven't told a girl I like her when I'm sober. I just don't know. All I know, though, is that I can't tell her. Ugh...

I know I sound pathetic, putting this down on an Internet blog. But whatever. I need to get it somewhere. Call me chickenshit. Call me a giant pussy. Whatever. I'll be trying my hand at a live blog, even though I've never done one before. You'll be able to laugh hysterically at my screw-ups, which I know will happen. Probably multiple times throughout the night. But whatever. It'll be fun. Lets do it.

8:00 - Pregame commentary, usual useless shit. Talking about CW and how he's dominating. Talking about various SLU players. The Chaifetz Arena is sold out, 10,000+ expected for the game. Cut to commercial before starting line-ups.
8:05 - In an interesting twist of fate, it seems we'll be watching on WHIO, but it'll be coming from the SLU side, Sports 11. The commentators will be from SLU, not UD. WHIO never ceases to amaze me.
8:09 - Tip-off won by UD, foul on UD under the basket. On Huelsman. Turns into a SLU basket.
8:11 - Three-point shot by SLU, followed by a traveling call on UD. 7-4 SLU.
8:12 - CW with a huge dunk, but waved off with a charging call. After looking at the replay, it was, in fact, as good call. Rare for A10 refs.
8:14 - Commentators continue to call Huelsman "Hillsman." He probably deserves it. Little goes to the line, promptly misses both. 9-4 SLU.
8:15 - 15:53 left in the half, timeout by UD to try to stop the 7-0 SLU run. 11-4 UD. Shot by UD bounces over backboard, prompting a Tv timeout. 15:35 left in the half.
8:20 - London drives the lane, goes up for a lay-up, and gets rejected. Foul called on SLU, London at the line. Makes the first, clanks the second. 11-5 SLU.
8:22 - Tie-up under the basket, apparently they counted a trey for UD. UD also ends up with the ball. 13-8 SLU. Majerus has massive bitch tits.
8:27 - TV timeout with 11:36 left in the half. 13-8 SLU. Baskets traded after the timeout, 15-10 SLU.
8:30 - UD at the line, hits both. Wow.
8:32 - SLU with a few baskets, followed by a UD turnover. 20-12 SLU.
8:34 - Paul Williams charges in for a layup, gets called for a charge. Fuck this. Turnover graphic comes up, Xavier 5 and SLU 2. That's right, UD and X are the same. Worst insult ever. Is this secretly WHIO?
8:36 - 22-12 SLU at the 8-minute TV timeout. Backcourt violation on SLU, UD gets ball under their basket. Warren hits a 2-pointer.
8:38 - Traveling violation on SLU. UD converts it into 2 points. Foul on UD back on SLU's end, sending Paul Eckerle to the line. Hits first, UD rebounds the second, and drives the length to score a layup.
8:41 - "Hillsman" called for a foul. Big surprise. 25-18 SLU. 4:30 left in half.
8:43 - Williams called for a foul on a SLU fast-break. SLU going to the line to complete the three-point play after commercial. 27-20 SLU.
8:44 - Why does it seem like Jeff Schmitt comes out with 10 new commercials every day? Please make it stop. SLU completes the three-point play.
8:46 - Mickey "Mouse" Perry gets an easy bucket, UD comes up with a SLU turnover, and jump-ball called on UD's return. SLU ball.
8:49 - Timeout wth 1:43 left in the half. SLU up 28-22. Majerus looks like he's craving a cheeseburger. They better have them piping hot in the locker room.
8:50 - SLU comes out of the TO in a box-in-one defense, with Lisch covering Perry. UD kicks the ball to MJ (I think) for a quick 2. UD foul at the other end, sending SLU to the line for 2 shots. Misses both. 28-24 SLU with 38.9 seconds left.
8:53 - First half ends with arren going coast-to-coast, only to get rejected on the lay-up. 28-24 SLU. Shitty half for the Flyers. And I expected this to be a low-scoring game. Should be a fun second set. Back in 15 minutes with the rest of the game.

UD 1 for 6 from 3-Point Land, although SLU is only 2 for 7. The scary part - our only 3-ball is from Luke Fab. That's surprising.

9:09 - UD scores first bucket of the half, and CW layup. UD comes up with a loose-ball scramble. UD takes advantage, ties up the game at 28, and SLU takes an immediate timeout.
9:13 - SLU misses a shot, UD rebounds. Drives to other end, missed, and a UD offensive board. CW drives, gets a foul, and heads to the line for 2. Misses first, drains second. UD up by 1 with 18 minutes left in the game.
9:16 - "Hillsman" gets an offensive rebound, drops it, and knocks it to Little. Chaz drives, gets fouled, and goes to the line. Clanks the first (not a surprise), rolls the second in for a point.
9:18 - MJ hits a difficult shot, and Liddell comes back with a 2-pointer. 16-minute TV timeout, tied at 32.
9:21 - Chaz fouled coming out of the timeout. Goes to the line, hits both.
9:22 - Willie Reed and MJ crash into the media tables under the basket, scrambling after a loose ball. MJ goes to the line, and makes one. 35-32 UD.
9:24 - Searcy called for the offensive foul. SLU misses at the other end, UD grabs the rebound, and Perry is called for traveling.
9:27 - Luke Faaaaaaabulous called for a block under the SLU basket. Conklin at the line for SLU, hits one of two.
9:28 - SLU promply steals the ball back, and hits a jumper to go up 37-35. UD responds with a 2-pointer on the next possession.
9:30 - Liddell Version 3 hits a jumper, 39-37 SLU. Timeout and commercial break.
9:35 - Blocking foul on Little. Bullshit call - clean play. Even the SLU commentators disagree with the call. SLU at the line, makes both shots. 41-40 SLU with 9:30 left in the game.
9:36 - Wright blocks a SLU shot, called for a foul. SLU makes the second of two shots. CW draws a foul on the other end, and heads to the charity stripe. Hits the first, misses the second.
9:39 - Lisch goes to the line at the other end, makes one. 44-41 SLU. UD missed shot leads to a SLU fast break. Warren blocks the shot, and gets called for a foul. A little confusion after, and the refs decide to send SLU to the line for 2 shots rather than calling goaltending on London. Still 44-41 SLU, with 7:56 left in the game.
9:43 - SLU misses both shots, UD rebound, and CW turns it over on the UD side of the court.
9:45 - BG calls a 30-second timeout with 7:01 left. Score is still the same, 44-41 SLU. SLU foul after timeout, and Chaz goes to the line for a 1-and-1. Makes first, clanks the second. UD gets the offensive board, and throws the ball away on the baseline.
9:48 - London goes for a steal, but commits the foul. No harm. UD gets ball back, Warren drives the lane, and gets rejected.
9:50 - UD ball on the baseline, missed shot, and UD gets an offensive rebound. Another miss, scramble, and jump-ball goes to the Flyers. Shot-clock violation on UD after the inbounds. 44-42 SLU.
9:52 - SLU drives the lane, makes a lay-up, and gets the foul. Final TV timeout with 3:25 left in the game. SLU going to the stripe after the break.
9:55 - SLU hits the free-throw, and Little responds with a jumper at the other end. 47-44 SLU. 2:45 left. This one's going down to the wire.
9:56 - Questionable foul on UD sends SLU to the line, and they convert both. 29-44 SLU. CW drives and draws the foul at the opposite end, and heads to the line.
9:57 - Wright makes the first, misses the second.
9:58 - At the 2-minute mark, Lisch misses an open trey, UD gets the rebound. Wright draws a blocking foul at the other end of the court, and goes to the stripe (again). Drains the first, and BG calls a timeout.
10:00 - Chris hits the second, to pull the Flyers within 2 points. 29-47 SLU. 3-ball for SLU, 52-47 SLU. UD timeout with 55.5 seconds left in the game. Gulp.
10:02 - Warren throws the ball away, backcourt violation called on UD.
10:03 - Perry fouls Lisch after the inbounds, sending him to the line. Hits the first to extend the SLU lead to 6. Nails the second. 54-47 SLU with 32.2 seconds left. Goddammit.
10:06 - London misses both free throws, Lisch is fouled on the rebound and goes to the line. Extends the Billiken lead to 9 with 30.8 seconds left. Fuck.
10:10 - Game over. 57-49 Saint Louis. Pussyfuckingassdick.

That was poor showing for the Flyers. We didn't play well at all, and were just sluggish all game. Bye-bye ranking. This certainly seems like a trend - once we're ranked, we promptly lose the very next game. Maybe it's just better we stay unranked. Regardless, we still played extremely poorly.

Let me know how I did with the live blog. I'm sure it's a little long and in-depth, but I don't think it's too bad for my first try. If I get a chance, I'll hopefully do at least one more before the end of the season. This time, I'll try to give everyone more advanced notice for it.

Sunday Bloody Sunday

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhsTpzaxBO0

One of the greatest moments of rock and roll, right here. You let us down. You ran around and deserted us.
You made us cry. You said goodbye. You told a lie and hurt us.

We were due (perhaps overdue) for a bad loss. In the back of my head I had a bad feeling about today's game, but I didn't think we would end up losing it. I mean, Charlotte is one of the worst teams in the conference, coming into the game with a 7-14 record, and 1-6 in conference. I was sure the Flyers would pull this one off. I knew it was going to be a close game, like always, but I thought we would come out with a "W." Instead, we come out with what is likely our most embarrassing loss this season - 13 points.

Pathetic. Simply awful. I don't even want to write about it. Its just embarrassing. And I'm not going to make excuses, blaming the fact that MJ was out with the flu. It's not excuse. We are deep enough, we should have been able to work around it. I guess BG was right when he said Charlotte is the best 1-6 in-conference team in the nation... Give me a fucking break.

On the other hand, at least CJ continues to thrive as the man-crush of every Flyer Fanatic in the nation. He put up a respectable 13 points and 7 rebounds (both team-leading). Even though we lost, at least CJ continues to improve, and will be a spark for this team for the next few years.

The Rundown

A few things I've noticed the last few days...

1. I must congrats to Pat Summitt from Tennessee for reaching the 10-Century mark. In other words, congrats for reaching 1,000 wins in your coaching career. It's an impressive milestone, and to do it in 34 seasons, it's quite impressive.

2. Brent Musberger is bad enough at calling football games, but he's even worse at college basketball games. Only he could find a way to incorporate a Super Bowl reference into a basketball game.

3. I was watching the Xavier-Temple game tonight. It was a good game for the most part, until X pulled away and pretty much had the game in the bag. Its going to be a good game next Wednesday - too bad I won't be able to get tickets...

4. Axe Dark Temptations has to be the worst Axe/body spray scent ever. Who thinks that going around smelling like a giant chocolate bar is attractive? No, it's just a little strange.

Postgame recap - UD at LaSalle

This really isn't a full recap, more like my thoughts on the game and the next few from what I've gathered about the game.

First off, it was yet another "W" for UD against a struggling opponent. Granted, we only won by a meager 2 points, but it was a win. After leading by 11 at the half, we (once again) pissed away our lead and accomplished to make it a close game down the stretch. But we won, which this team likely wouldn't have last year. As much as I really do hate that phrase, it works here. We end up playing close games against sub-par competition, then playing exceptionally well against good teams.

Next game is Sunday at Charlotte. I don't really see us losing. I mean, Charlotte really isn't that great of a team, with a 7-13 record and 1-5 in conference. Their only A14 win is against UMass, a 5-point OT victory. Coincidentally, UMass is the only A10 loss for UD. Regardless, I have a feeling we'll come out with a win, probably in the 3-point range. Then, the following week, I have a hard time believing the U of D wouldn't end up ranked.

After that is the game most people are already anticipating - Xavier. This will be a good game, but I will refrain from making any predictions until after the Charlotte game. But until then, enjoy this win, and get ready for Sunday.

Top 5 - Super Bowl Commercials

Brought to you by SuperBowlAds.Fanhouse.com!

#5

<div id="videoContainer" style="position:absolute;left:0px;top:32px; It's just like America, only to the north. It's America Jr.!

1. Rush -- Seriously, where would music be without these guys? I mean, the power trio of Prog Rock. 30+ years of rocking, and still going strong. I mean, with songs like 2112, Limelight, Mystic Rhythms, and Far Cry, how can you not be amazing?!?

2. Hockey -- One of my favorite sports. Canada introduced America to hockey. And I'm damn glad they did. Where else can you see people smash other people into walls without penalty, get into fights for the most random things, and hit a little rubber puck into a net on a giant sheet of ice? Answer - no where else.

3. Bacon -- Without this vital piece of fried meat, breakfast would be just boring. Granted, I would be a hell of a lot less heavy without bacon, but why bother? it's so orgasmically good.

4. Maple Syrup -- Pancakes would just be boring without this liquidy goodness. I mean, how can you eat pancakes plain, without syrup?? It just doesn't make sense. Maple syrup makes them, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

5. ...I really can't think of a good thing to put here. I just think Canada is good for the 4 things above, and nothing else. Unless you want to count Mounties. I don't, but they are really funny.

The End of an Error

And thank God for it. 8 years too long. I know I supported Bush in '04, but in all honesty, he was a better choice than Kerry... But to stay as far away from politics as possible (since I admit I don't have enough knowledge or interest), I just want to congratulate Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States of America. He might have bumbled to Oath, but I probably would too if I had the country dumped on my shoulders, especially when it is in such a shitty shape as it is now. Regardless, he is such a badass speaker, I am sure he will do a great job as President. I am really optimistic for the next 4 years, and am really hoping we can turn this country around. So with that, I can honestly say, without any reservation, that I am hot for Obama.

Best Show Ever

So I am currently watching the greatest show ever created - Dirty Jobs. Mike Rowe is a beast among men for all he does on the show. Half these jobs, I'm surprised people actually do them. It's really interesting to see a different side of the occupational world, the jobs most people avoid (or don't even know about). One of the best shows ever.

I'm Outlaw Pete

So, a new Springsteen track has appeared on YouTube. This isn't a "true" live concert album, as it is a compilation of selected songs from various shows during two different tours. The 15-song track list comes from entries pulled from shows in Birmingham (UK), New Orleans, Phoenix, and San Diego during the 1988 Hold Your Fire tour, as well as a few from the show at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ during the 1986 Power Windows tour. I bought the album off iTunes for a respecatable $7.99 (which isn't bad at all for the 15 songs included, especially considering this was $11.99 at Best Buy). Plus, it includes some of their best songs from the '80s, such as Subdivisions, Mystic Rhythms (a personal favorite), the rarely-heard Witch Hunt, and Red Sector A (another favorite of mine). It alsoo includes The Rhythm Method, Neil Peart's drum solo from these tours. While it only clocks in at about half the length of his more current solos (this version at 4:37, with his current solos closer to 9:00 in length), it's still a very impressive piece from one of the greatest drummers of all time. (You tell me when you find another drummer with more technical solos, not to mention his contribution to Rush's song catalogue, and I'll admit defeat. SPOILER - you can try as hard as you want, you won't find a better drummer.)

All in all this is a fantastic live album, and very indiciative of Rush's song style at the time. This version of Red Sector A might just be my favorite - Geddy is spot-on with the lyrics, though I do wish more versions utilized the light-and-pyrotechnic effect seen during the Grace Under Pressure tour version. The cut of Mystic Rhythms is also fantastic, though I'm not sure if it beats out the R30 version. I'm going to havve to take a few more listens to it before the jury makes its final decision.

Grade: B+
Definitely check this one out. No Rush fan will be disappointed.

Congrats to the REAL National Champion...

Utah!

That's right, Utah should be the real college football champs. Check out this fantastic article from ESPN.com's Rick Reilly. I agree with everything he says here. Just because the long-flawed BCS system has Florida and Oklahoma as contendors for the national title, neither are deserving. Utah won every game this season, beat 4 ranked teams, and annihillated 'Bama in the Sugar Bowl (played in New Orleans, not too far from Alabama). No other team is more deserving of the national title than Utah. And why is it that the BCS only includes about half of the Division I schools in the nation? If it really is the Division I national championship, shouldn't all 119 Division I schools be eligible for a chance to play for it, not just those in the "BCS conferences?" If the last few seasons are any indication, a playoff system needs to be adopted for Division I, including all 119 Division I teams. That's the only fair way to determine a true champion.

So congrats to the Utah Utes, the true 2008 National Champion!

What next...?

The world really has come to an end. It might have been the worst game I've seen in my 3 years at UD. Now on to some notes I took on my cell phone throughout the night.

The score at halftime was 17-17. No, that's not a typo, it really was that low. That's a score I'd expect to see halfway through the first half, not halfway through the game. I was seriously wondering if we would break 40 by the final buzzer. But if you think that's bad, here's some of the stats the teams compiled after 20 god-awful minutes of "basketball." UD shot 26% from the floor, going 8 for 31. And our three-point shooting was even worse - 13% (1 for 8). I didn't catch the Miami side of the stats, but I do know we kept them under 40% shooting (I want to say they were around 35% or so). Charity stripe wasn't too hurtful - we only got there once, but missed the shot. On the oter hand, Miami went 50% (2 for 4) on free throws. But one of the few good stats from the first half were fouls - 4 on UD and 5 on Miami. This might be the first time all season we committed less than 7 fouls in any half (though I could be wrong).

The second half didn't go much better. I had thought one team might come out of the locker room on a streak, but no such luck. With 8:21 left in the game, the score was tied at 29. The final score ended up with a 5-point UD win, 45-40. I'm shocked we actually broke 40. Hell, I nearly shat myself from pure surprise when both teams got above the magical 40 mark.

UD finished the game going 17 for 53 from the floor, for an abysmal 32.1%. However, Miami was held under 40%, finishing with a marginally-better 35.4% (17-48). Three-Point Land was just mean to both teams tonight - Miami made only 2 of their 13 shots (15.4%), while the Flyers were 3 for 16 (18.8%). Miami went to the free-throw line only 6 times all night, making 4 for a 66.7% shooting rate. UD made 8 or their 10 (80%) free throws, which is much better than we've been doing most of the season. Granted, 10 free shots isn't really much to judge on, and probably about half of them came in the last minute of the game, but making 8 of them is much better than we've done all year. And if we hadn't made them, this game would have been much closer, possibly ending in a UD loss (which would have been even worse).

The fouls were kept low, though, UD ending the game with 10, Miami with 12. That's a pretty impressive stat, given we've been known to commit 10 or more fouls a half pretty much all season. One thing that was nice to see is that we were successful in shutting down Miami's Michael Bramos, who has been the Redhawk's scoring leader all season. he's been averaging 19 point, 4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game all year. Tonight, he was held to just 6 points (all from 2-point territory). He did grab 4 rebounds (1 offensive) and 3 assists, but other than that we were able to shut him down. Which is a good boost for our defense, which has been somewhat lackluster at times this year.

Some things that need to improve would be rebounding (both offensive and defensive), turnovers, free-throw shooting, and tempo control. We gave up too many easy rebounds tonight, both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. If we want to do well the rest of the season, we need to work on this, or some of the A-14 teams will eat us up underneath the basket. Turnovers are always an issue, but tonight we just seemed sloppy. (Hey, that's another good word to describe the game!) Giving up easy steals underneath the opponent's hoop lead to easy points. Throwing the ball away killed us, especially when we were in good scoring position. Not protecting the ball lead to a few easy Miami points. All in all it needs to improve soon, or we're just going to get killed in conference play. As has been our Achilles' heel all year, free throw shooting needs to be more consistent. We did good on it tonight, but we can't slip back into the realm of 20-30% FT-shooting, or it'll be the death of us. Even 50% is better than nothing - I'll be happy with that if we can start shooting at that rate from the Charity Stripe on a nightly basis. Tempo control needs to get better, too. It seems we like to start running the game too fast when we start pulling ahead, and that usually leads to stupid play. Like throwing the ball away. Or not looking around the court to see a wide-open Chris Wright on the baseline, itching to go in for the big dunk. (Both of which happened tonight, by the way.)

All in all it was an interesting game to watch, no matter how horrid both teams played. But if we want to keep winning, we need to improve on some basic things. If we do that, I have a feeling we'll do pretty good the rest of the year. And maybe beat Xavier once (or at least give them a good game).

Employment = Good

Yay! At the moment it looks like I'll just be doing some basic lab organizing and whatnot (probably also helping him get stuff together for his Ecuador trip when we get closer to spring break), but it sounds like I'll start doing some field research/collecting when the weather starts to get better. In what has become commonplace for us Buckeye fans, OSU decided to choke in yet another postseason bowl game. But at least this one was close (unlike the past 2 National Championship games, which were both massive blowouts). The Buckeye defense played pretty good all game, holding the Longhorn offense at bay for the majority of the game. That hasn't happened very often all season. Hell, Texas was shut out in the first quarter, which had only happened once before all season. Needless to say, our defense played well. Now if only the offense had decided to pull out the big played sooner than the 4th quarter...

Regardless, it was a good game, and much closer than I had expected. There's good things to come from Pryor, who even showed a little more diversity by playing wide reciever a few times, and catching the first TD of the 4th, which pulled the Bucks to within 4 points and kept the game close. It's going to be a lot of fiun watching him blossom over the next few years - we've got a lot to look forward to with him, including the possibility of a Heisman (and maybe 2 if he continues to play well). I just hope we can figure out what we can do to to keep in the running in the big games.

First Day of Class of the New Year

Well, today didn't go nearly as bad as I thought it would. Tomorrow morning I'll be headed back to Dayton for another semester of class and whatnot. So I thought I might as well put down some of my thoughts and stuff from the last few days.

First off, the last two weeks have been good in some respects, but mostly not-so-good. It was good with a nice break from school work, and a trip to Boston. However, the worst part was that I am now officially broke. While in Boston, I went through all $500 my parents gave me for Christmas, and more. Bad idea, as some of that money was to help me for the first few weeks of this next semester. Oops... So now, with my parents pissed at me for spending all my money, I have to learn how to live on a budget of about $15 a day. I don't think it'll be too hard, but I'll just have to work at it. I mean, I was able to make about $100 last for the last week of last semester, so I think if I keep it up I can do it.

Plus, I am honestly down to my last chance. The parents were seriously considering pulling me out of UD and enrolling me into OSU or CSCC. So I'm honestly lucky that I am coming back for another semester. But this is my very last chance. No more slacking. No more fuck-ups. I need to buckle down and concentrate on my grades. If I don't have at least a C in all my classes I won't be back next year. No exceptions. Plus, if I watch my eating and work on my weight, my parents will give me money when I come home for summer. If I'm 200 pounds by the end of the semester, I'll have $1000 for me. And if I'm below 200 (even if its 199), I'll have an extra $500. So I just need to concentrate and get back into it. If I do, which I really think I can if I put my mind to it, all will work out in the end. Wish me luck. :-)

Live From Boston - Final Episode

That's right, I went from Ep. 1/2 to the Final Ep. I was also extremely busy for masically the entire trip, so I didn't really have a chance to update the blog. But anyway, I had a great time, and it was totally worth it. I just wish I was going to be there for another few days to see some of the stuff I missed. but at least I did get to the Sam Adams brewery, which was one of the things I was looking most forward to. My original flight, Columbus to Cleveland to Boston, was delayed, and I was put on a different flight. Now I'm going Columbus to Cinci to Boston. So instead of getting into Boston around 9:15, I won't be there until close to 1 PM. It's not really thjat big of a deal, just a little inconvenient, as I have to sit around in the terminal here in C-Bus for about 2 hours waiting to board. Damn you winter weather!!!

Up, Up, And Away

In just a few hours, I'll be leaving Ohio for a week and going to Boston for a conference. One of the best feelings ever. On Saturday they got annihilated by Duke, 82-64, on the road. Tonight they got beat by Butler, 74-65, at home. I'm sure this will affect the A-10, and in turn UD's, RPI come tourney time, but I don't really care that much. Xavier lost. Twice. In a row. The way they played tonight, we could probably beat them. It'll still be a close game, but I think we have a good chance this year. Maybe even beat them twice. Regardless, though, we'll give them a good game, no matter the outcome.

And seeing Sean Miller rung up with a technical was sweet. About time that prick got a T. I doubt they'll be very long, but hopefully this'll just get others more informed and excited/disappointed for some movies. So, without further ado, we're off.

Movie Review 1

Movie: Yes Man
Location: AMC Lennox Town Center 24, Columbus OH
Theater #: 1
Date: Sunday, December 21, 2008
Time: 7:40 PM
Review: I actually really liked this movie. I thought there was a great message in there, something that doesn't seem to be in a lot of Jim Carrey films. Along with a good storyline, there was plenty of comedic results from Carrey's character's thought that he made a pact to say "yes" to any opportunity that presents itself. By doing so, although he may not see the benefit immediately, leads to better things. I won't ruin anything about it, so you'll have to see it for yourself to find out what happens. And Zooey Deschanel playing the female lead doesn't hurt - she's a lot of fun to watch.

Movie Review 2

Movie: Role Models
Location: AMC Lennox Town Center 24, Columbus OH
Theater #: 16
Date: Monday, December 22, 2008
Time: 8:15 PM
Review: Another movie that was a lot of fun to watch. While you go into it knowing there's going to be a lot of dirty humor, profanity, and the like, there's actually a great storyline underneath it all. Two guys, employed by Minotour Energy Drinks, crash the company car and face a decision - 30 days in jail, or become role models to young kids for 150 hours. Based on the movie title, you know their decision. And here on in the floodgates open, with each role model getting to know his Little. Again, I'm not going to ruin anything, but I will say that they all learn about each other, and finish with a happy ending. And several nice boob shots never hurts any movie. Unless the boobs are nasty (a la Rosie O'Donnell tits. Blech...).

There Really Is Light at the End of the Tunnel

Exams are over. Finally. Took fucking long enough. And for the first time in my college career, I don't have en exam on Friday. Which in really nice. I've had pretty much the entire of today off, save for one final exam in the Internets. (More on that later...) So tomorrow by noon, I'll be on the road back home to Columbus. I'll be there for about a week, until Saturday the 27th. Then I'm off the Boston for the Alpha Phi Omega national convention. I'll be there through New Years Day, then back home tom work a few more days before coming back to campus for the second semester. And it really sucks that we only have a 2-week break this year. I mean, it was this long freshman year, and it'll be about the same length next year too. But last year we had a good 3 weeks off. Most places I know get 3 weeks every year, if not more - not one 3-week break in 4 years. But whatever. At least it's a nice break to relax and get refreshed before the second semester begins.

Oh, and about that exam I took today... Nothing too special really, just Philosophy of Science. The exam was on WebCT, which for those of you unfamiliar with it, it's basically a web/internet teaching aid that about a quarter of teachers I've had so far use. It's really not the best method to use, and I don't really like it all that much. It really seems like most of the who use it rely on it too much. But whatever. I got through the class, and ended up with a 75% on the final. So, provided I did fairly decent on the final paper, I should end up with a decent grade in the class. We'll have to see.

Check back later tomorrow, when I'll hopefully have a nice little update from home. More than likely sitting on the couch watching SportsCenter or some form of sporting event.

My Apologies (and Daily Rant I)

Yeah, I suck at getting posts in. This past week has been busy with finals, studying (read: procrastinating), and the like. So needless to say, it's been extremely busy. But with finals wrapping up (I only have one more to go) and me going home on Friday, everything should be a lot less crazy. At least until the 27th, when I'm off the Boston, MA for a week. So without further ado, let the ranting continue...

1) Exams blow. Hardcore. I would do much rather simply write a final paper than have to take a final exam. Since when should our semester grade rely so greatly upon a single, 2-hour, semester-cumulative test? It's absolutely ludicrous. I'll be honest, I don't test well. At all. I freeze up, I choke, I suck when it comes to taking exams. So many things ride on the final, which makes it even more nerve-wracking for me. When equates to me doing worse. Much, much worse. I thought I did fairly well on my Genetics final. I studied. I thought I knew what I was doing. Nope. I bombed it. Ended up with a nice, big, fat "D" in the class. Fuck. And don't even get me started on O-Chem. I took that, and knew it was bad news from the start. I don't get that class. It's ridiculously hard. I might even go as far as to say next to impossible. So I'll be suffering through it for yet another semester. Double fuck. Looks like I'll be counting on Photography and Genetics Lab (maybe) as GPA boosters this semester. 'Cause I sure as hell know that my other classes won't do much for me. Triple fuck.

2) Mother Nature sucks. She sucks big time. Most of the time I like winter. Really, I do. But freezing rain is one thing I can do without. Shit, that stuff is fucking dangerous. When you start slipping and sliding towards the busy street (read: big cars moving very fast and unable to stop in the ice) on a driveway that's only sloped about 7.34*, you know it's bad. Real bad. Snow I can handle. Sleet I can handle most of the time. But ice? That's a completely different story. I'm just waiting for some Harvard genius to invent shows that have internally-heated soles that melt that ice as you walk on it. Oh, and for the jackass who does finally invent those shoes, remember to give credit where credit is due. In other words, copyrighted by me, and I want 20% of all profits of these shoes. Bitch.

3) UD Campus Maintenance/Groundskeepers/Whatever The Fuck They're Called sucks. You always see them when they're not needed. Driving around campus, planting trees, picking up the occasional trash that doesn't find the garbage can, emptying said garbage cans, etc. But as soon as you really need them, they disappear. Like when the fire alarms are going on for 3 and a half hours. They say they'll be tere ASAP. You would think that means within, oh, 20 or 30 minutes. No, it apparently means within 4 hours. When it's freezing raining (see 2, above), and the sidewalks, streets, and parking lots become one giant sheet of ice. You would think they would be out laying salt to keep people from slipping and falling on their asses. Nope. They're no where to be seen. While in the meantime the ice is accumulating on the ground, making it next to impossible to get from Point A to Point B - even if the Points are 30 feet from each other. So I thought I'd update everyone on what's been going on. Like anyone really cares. And like anyone really reads this anyway. But whatever, I know someone, somewhere will read this at some point, and leave a comment. When that does happen, please excuse the splash of white fluid on the screen. I'll just be extremely excited.

Anyway, finals are about a week away. And I haven't even looked at the schedule yet, so I don't know when mine are. But whatever. If I have a Saturday exam, I'll be pissed like a bear who just got cock-slapped by a skinny hiker. But that's really the only thing I'm not looking forward to.

I had my final in Genetics lab today, which was a lot easier than I thought it would be. No problem there. I've got no complaints.

...Hmm... That seems to be all I've got for now. Fairly uneventful the last few days. So I'll leave you with a few images of FAIL I came across this afternoon. And look for a blog or two in the near future centered all around FAIL and it's wonderful-ness.

Poor beaver... I haven't been to any other suites in other arenas, so I can't really compare Boesch to them, but I'd bet it's on par. TVs, carpet, leather seats, counter space, tables, and a mini-fridge. What more could you want? How about a free buffet dinner? but that's not all. There was even FREE BEER!!! That's right, the beer was FREE!!!1!11!!1! Where else can you get this at the Arena? And it wasn't even crappy beer. It was Miller Light, Bud, Bud Light, and Heineken. The good stuff.

But enough about the suite and the free beer. On to the game.

UD played pretty good tonight. one major area that needs improvement, and fast, is free throws. We barely shot 55% from the Charity Strip tonight. C'mon guys, there's a reason it's called a free throw. It's supposed to be easy points. I don't know what the best way to improve on it, but they need to do so, and fast. It got to a point that Huelsman clunked 3 in a row. That's just simply pathetic. We need to fix that. Now. Or it's going to be ugly when we get deeper into the schedule.

Paul Williams finally had a good game tonight. He took 5 shots in his 12 minutes of play, all from Magical 3-Point Land. He made 3 of them, for a total of 9 points. Not bad for a freshman who really hasn't come out playing until tonight. Hopefully he'll continue improving as the season goes on. If he does, he might just be one of the best, if not the best, freshman player on the team.

Free beer.

Charles Little was a complete beast tonight. He was all over the place, shooting, defending, and rebounding. He's starting to look like the Charles from past years. Finally. He shot 7-10 in 29 minutes for a total of 17 points. He led all scorers tonight, and we needed it, with a sub-par performance from Huelsman and Chris Wright.

Speaking of Wright, he just didn't look like himself tonight. I don't know if he's not feeling well, has something on his mind, didn't want to play, or what. Regardless, he didn't look like himself at all. He played much less than normal in the first half, due to foul trouble. He fouled twice within the first 10 minutes or so, and was benched for the rest of the half. He ended up fouling out in the second half, leaving with only 8 points and shooting 3-6 from the field in a mere 13 minutes of play. Whatever's wrong, I really hope it's not too serious, as he's one of the team's leaders and we need him playing as best he can.

One thing I did notice, Rob Lowery = London Warren. Seriously. Same hair, same style of play, same control problems. Tonight it was glaringly obvious, with Lowery turning the ball over multiple times, be it from an easy steal or throwing it away. We can't have that once we get later into the season. We need him to play better. The last thing the team needs is 2 London Warrens on the court at the same time. Free beer in the Boesch Lounge.

I've included two pictures of the 110 or so I took at the game. One is the scoreboard, showing the final score of 87-70 in favor of UD. The other is Marcus Johnson's huge 3 at the buzzer, going into halftime. This put UD up by 9 at the half, 40-31. Big shots like these help the team carry energy into the locker room. It's these kind of things we need. It helps us come out and play with drive. And we'll need big plays the next few weeks, as we have both Akron, Miami (OH), and Creighton away coming up. These are going to be important games, especially since they are away. Those teams will be coming to play, hoping to beat us and kill our momentum. we can't let that happen - we need big plays to carry us through these games and into conference play.

Oh, did I mention the Boesch Lounge provides you with FREE BEER?!?!?!??!!?!

Here's my video of the halftime performance by the Human Slinkie, who was apparently on America's Got Talent. It's the worst kind of snooze-fest too -- the one when you're in class and can't do anything else but sit there. And explore the Internet on your laptop. Which in this case, sadly isn't doing a whole lot...

Talking about the social structure of science is only so interesting. And in this case, that interest level peaked about 50 minutes ago - at the beginning of class. Yup, you guessed it - it Philosophy of Science!!!1!11!!one!!! w00t!! Makes me want to claw my eyes out with my own two hands. Can you tell, I just can't hold my excitement in anymore!
[/sarcasm]

In order to keep myself sane (somewhat), I'll just put down various random thoughts I've had over the past day or so.

Why is it that the later into the semester you get, the less you end up caring about your work? You would think that as you get closer to the end of the semester, and thus closer to exams, you would care more about the quality of your work. But for me, it seems to be exactly the opposite. I just want to be finished with classes and move on to the New Year. I need a fresh start, like nobody's business. At least there's only two and a half weeks left before winter break. And it can't come soon enough...

So, I have a lot of work to get done before the end of the semester. I have a huge Philosophy paper (yes, for the very class I am sitting in currently) due at the end of the week. I haven't gotten very far on it yet, so I thought I'd be productive and get a good start on it last night. So I planned to stay up all night to crank out at least the first couple pages before class today. Well, by 6 AM, I couldn't go on. I had to get some sleep. So I kept my room light on, as well as my iTunes playing, hoping I would be able to get up 2 hours later to get ready for class. Well, as my luck has it, I didn't wake up until 10:30 AM. And the best part is, apparently I got up, turned the music off, and shut off my alarm. I remember none of this.

Anyway, after today's done, I'll have one week to crank out my three big projects - two papers and my photography final project. Not too hard, but a lot of work. But if I can apply myself, like I plan of doing (for once), I'll be able to get it all done. Wish me lick. :-)

Ode to Organic Chemistry

Oh you evil class. Why is it that I just cannot pass?

OK, enough poetic shit. I hate this damn class. This is my second time taking it, and yet, I am still failing. Maybe I just didn't put enough effort into it (again), or maybe its that I'm just so lost I don't care anymore (again). Well, I guess it would be a little of both. There's just so much information that has to be memorized... Ugh, it's just frustrating.

As a Biology major, I need to pass this class - both semesters. Currently I'm in the first semester of it. And I hear the second is just as bad. fgasbfjAZvbsdagf <-- That's a pretty good representation on how I feel about it. That's pretty much all I have to say about the class. So I'll leave you with the fun little picture I included. I made it myself, BTW. Where to start...

For one, how sweet it is to see Notre Dame suck. For yet another year. Charlie Weis, or should I say Chumplie Weis, is one of the most over-rated coaches I've ever seen. Ever. He just can't win in the big games (or even in the small games), and I'm loving every minute of it. Being an Ohio State fan, I naturally hate two schools above all others - ND and M*ch*gan. But I'll get to M*ch*gan at a later time...
Back on topic, ND fails at nearly everything football related the last few years. I mean, they did finish at .500 this year (better than their 3-win season last year), and they are still bowl-eligible, but it's still pathetic. They had fairly high expectations for this year (at least from what I've been able to gather), and they under-preform yet again. Last week they lost a close game to a Syracuse team with 8 losses. The first time ND has lost to an 8-loss team ever. That's just sad. Then this week they get blown out by USC. Granted, I didn't think they would win, but I did think they would get at least one first down before the 3rd quarter and put up more than a field goal on the USC Condoms. But they didn't. Which is very fitting for their performance under Weis.

On to Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game. This was a great game. Two good teams facing each other in Stillwater. A classic, old-fashioned shootout that didn't disappoint. 102 points put up between both teams. This was a close one until about halfway through the 4th quarter. Even though it didn't go the way I had hoped, it was certainly a fun game to watch. The end result ended up 61-41 Oklahoma, but it was still a well-fought contest.

Oregon-Oregon State was another great game tom watch. The lower-ranked Quack Attack simply crushed the Beavers in Corvallis. Fantastic play after fantastic play just defined the night for the Ducks. Every time the Beavers scored again and made it seem like they were going to make it a game, Oregon pulled away with another score. Nearly 700 years of total offense for Oregon showed they weren't going to take this game lightly. And they didn't, winning 65-38. As at Buckeye fan, this couldn't be better. With OSU (Oregon version) out of the BCS bowl picture, this opens up another slot that OSU (Ohio version) might be given. Just another reason
to love Rivalry Week.

Plenty of other major upsets and big games were played today, but I don't feel like going into detail about them. So, I'll sum them up briefly, for anyone who gives a shit. Florida downed Florida State, 45-15. Kansas pulled a huge upset out on Mizzou (at Mizzou), 40-37. Cincy buried Syracuse (yes, the same Syracuse that upset ND last week), 30-10. Texas Tech edged by Baylor, 35-28. And Georgia Tech pulled out a fantastic upset on Georgia, 45-42.
